Postdoctoral researcher, Maastricht University, The Netherlands

The importance and uniqueness of ARTERY’s work were immediately clear to me when, in 2018, as young PhD student, I attended my first conference at Guimarães. Among its many activities, I believe that promoting, supporting and providing visibility to the work of young researchers truly is at the heart of the ARTERY’s goals.

At annual congresses, ARTERY promotes several important initiatives for its Young Investigators. I believe, however, that keeping our Young Investigators network alive and active throughout the year is equally key to maximise benefits for young researchers. As Chair of the ARTERY Young Investigators, I will try my best to make this happen!

In my research, I integrate engineering and clinical studies to investigate the evolution/deterioration of arterial biomechanics in ageing and disease, with particular interest to arterial stiffening. In my ex vivo experimental work, I characterise the arterial wall mechanical properties at different scales, from the level its constituents to the macroscopic wall function, using computational modelling to understand changes in structure-function with ageing and disease. My in vivo work aims to translate the knowledge acquired through experimental studies into non-invasive techniques to effectively assess the performance of large arteries in clinical settings.

In my free time, I am a passionate musician, runner and traveller.
